Supplication for a Spouse

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: I am full grown man and am yet to get married. So please, I am asking for a dua which I will be able to make during my prayers.

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

The best supplications are often those which are heartfelt and sincere. Strive to live the virtuous qualities you are looking for in a spouse, and ask Allah for an increase in all good for yourself and the entire ummah.

Realize the words of Allah, ‘If My slaves ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls on Me.’ [Qur’an, 2:185]

The following Qur’anic supplications have also been recommended:

[1] “O Lord! Grant us good in this life, and good in the next, and save us from the torment of the Fire (Rabbana atina fi’dunya hasana wa fi’l-akhirati hasana wa qina `adhab al-nar)” [Qur’an, 2:201]

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Some commentators of the Qur’an interpreted the “good in this life” to mean a righteous spouse. Sawi, in his Hashiya on Jalalayn, mentions that everything that will assist one in attaining the eternal felicity of the next life is considered the “good of this life”, including a pious spouse.

[2] “My lord, I am in absolute need of the good You send me (Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khairin faqir)” [Qur’an, 28:24]

رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

This is the supplication that the Prophet Moses (Allah bless him and give him peace) made after helping the two young ladies draw water from the well. Many of the righteous have recommended this supplication for the one seeking a spouse.

[3] “Our Lord! Grant unto us spouses and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous. (Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyatina qurrata a`yunin wa’j`alna li’l muttaqina imama)” [Qur’an, 25:74]

May Allah give you and others every success in their search, insha’Allah.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
