SeekersGuidance’s Top 5 Videos of 2017

If you’re like us, we’re visual learners. We like to see the people that we gain knowledge from and benefit directly through their words and mannerisms, and even their appearance. The Companions learned from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) this way, and we want the same experience.

SeekersGuidance works hard in order to make this connection to our scholars and learning resources as accessible and free-of-cost as possible for you. Our high-quality variety of videos uploaded to YouTube regularly show our commitment to providing free, open, and reliable Islamic resources that you can feast your eyes on anytime, anywhere.

Here are the top 5 videos you viewed in 2017:

1. Knowledge is Light: The Urgency of Learning & Spirituality in Testing Times with Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah

“Whether we are teaching fiqh or theology, we have to be cognizant of what people already believe, what they already know, and whether it is true or false. Because there are so many issue here that make it difficult or impossible to understand what is there in the fiqh or theology […] We cannot teach people from the books directly, as if they were living 400 years ago. [Then] there were certain cognitive frame and paradigms which were well-known and were suitable for the kind of knowledge we’re teaching. That’s not the case today.” – Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah

2. Extinguishing the Fire: Overcoming Anger, Hatred and Envy with Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

“Generally speaking, we should focus on the good and overlook the bad. If you want your relationships to be successful, focus on the good in people and do your best to ignore the not-so-good, and you will actually be very happy. Focus on the good in people and make the intention to build those bridges between you and that person to help that good come to the surface and cover up the not-so-good in them. And make an intention to subtly, indirectly, implicitly point them in the direction they need to go to cover their faults.” – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus

3. Getting to Know Allah Through Fasting with Imam Siraj Wahhaj

“Every one of us has a unique smell. Your smell isn’t like anyone else’s. Dogs has a sense of smell millions of times stronger than human beings. When [they] are looking for someone, they give dogs the person’s shirt and [the dog] can go find the person because their scent is unique. If you have doubts about this, go to Surah Yusuf. Ya’qub (peace be upon him) said, “I smell the scent of Yusuf.” (Qur’an 12:94) Don’t you see that Allah has subjected for you everything in the heavens and the earth? [All of it] has been subjected for human beings! So now He tell you to fast, and you’re gonna say what?” – Imam Siraj Wahhaj

4. Giving Life to the Night of the 15th of Sha’ban and its Virtues with Ustadh Amjad Tarson

When it comes to good deeds, if there is a hadith and it’s weak (da’if), and it says ‘if you do x, y, and z, this is your reward’, the Believer will say, ‘I’m gonna try to get that reward, insha’Allah. In case the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) actually said it, then I’m gonna do it. And if it’s not exactly correct, Allah is still gonna reward [me] for trying.’ So if someone says that ‘giving life’ to the Night of the 15th of Sha’ban by standing in prayer, asking and turning to Allah with whatever is in your heart is [based on] weakness and that you shouldn’t do it, then what is better for you? To ‘give life’ to this Night or go to sleep and [maybe] miss Fajr?– Ustadh Amjad Tarsin

5. Three Ways to Connect to Prophet Muhammad in Rabi’ al-Awwal with Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Have something that you will do that will stir your love for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Read a book about him [that] highlights his character, or a work on the description (shama’il) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Read through it in this month; if it’s 200 pages, read 7-10 pages a day and you’ll finish it [within] the month. Have something that you can read that will re-kindle the love of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in your life.– Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
