How Do I Make Up Ramadan Fasts Missed Due to Pregnancy?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question

I was unable to fast last Ramadan due to pregnancy, and I have been unable to find advice based on the Quran and Sunna concerning what I should do to ensure that my obligation is met.

Do I need to makeup the days which I missed or should I feed poor people as is the case for those who are unable to fast due to illness? I follow the Hanafi school of thought. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

I pray you are in the best health and faith, insha’Allah.

Makeup

Yes, you need to make up the missed fasts.

Missing fasts due to the hardships of pregnancy is akin to missing fasts due to sickness.

If difficult, spread them out and make them up gradually. And ask Allah for strength, facilitation, and sincerity.
