Is It Valid to Make Hajj or Umrah Before One’s Parents?

Question: My family is telling me that because our parents in law haven’t been for Umra or Hajj, my husband and I can’t go yet because it wouldn’t be valid.  Is it true??

Answer: assalamu `alaykum

No, this is not accurate.

Whether one can go to Hajj or Umrah or not has no relation to whether one’s parents or parent in-laws have gone.

Rather, as it specifically relates to Hajj, you should strive to go as soon as you have the financial means to do so.

With the above, you need to express this to your family with wisdom and tact in a manner that does not offend them or harm relations. My advice would be to get a reliable scholar whom they trust to talk to them about the matter.
