What Is the Ruling About Using Laughing Gas During Labour?

Hanafi Fiqh

Question: Assalam ‘aleykum.

What is the ruling about using laughing gas during labour and delivery and is it possible to pray when prayer time comes during labour while using laughing gas?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that this message finds you well, insha’Allah.

Yes, it would be permitted to use laughing gas for medicinal purposes such as for easing childbirth pains. [Ibn `Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar `ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar]

As for the nullification of your ablution (wudu), this would be in the case that most of your speech becomes unclear, or that you find it difficult to differentiate between men and women or the earth and the sky– both of which are unlikely to be the case.
