What Is Riya (Ostentation)?

Should I Seek Islamic Knowledge Despite the Prohibition of My Parents?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question: Assalamu alaykum

Is it permissible to take the Step One Certificate course on this website if one is in need of that Fard Ayn Knowledge, whilst the parents prohibit him from listening or reading anything Islamic on the internet?

Answer:  Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

In general, you have a right and responsibility to seek personally obligatory knowledge. And you would normally have a right to do so, with discretion and without upsetting your parents nor arguing with them.

However: Given the considerations in such cases, please consult reliable local scholars about the specifics of the situation. Jazakum Allah khayr.
