Is It Permissible for Two Unrelated Persons of the Opposite Gender to Meet to Pray Together in a Prayer Room?

Shafi'i Fiqh

Question: Assalam alaykum,

Is it permissible for two unrelated persons of the opposite gender to meet to pray together on campus or in a prayer room?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this message finds you well, insha’Allah.

It is permissible for two unrelated persons of the opposite gender to meet to pray together on campus or in a prayer room.

The normal considerations governing gender interaction apply.

Specifically, it is impermissible to be in seclusion with an unrelated person of the opposite gender, such that the two people are relatively inaccessible to others.

If this were the case – and it does not appear to be – then it would be impermissible to do so.
