Supplication for Those Who Want to Memorize the Qur’an

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: I was wondering if you could provide me with some powerful supplications to recite during the Ruku/Sajdah portions of Tahajjud salat. Also, I was wondering if there was some kind of dua for those seeking to become Hafiz-AlQuran to make during Sajdah as that is the time when dua is very important. JazakAllah Khairun.

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

I’m not aware of any specific supplications for those seeking to become huffadh of the Qur’an. Though, in general, one can make such supplications in one’s voluntary prayers — specifically within one’s prostrations.

Begin by asking Allah for forgiveness and mercy for oneself, parents, teachers and the whole umma. Thank Allah for the blessings pouring down upon one and one’s family, and then ask Allah to be of those who memorize the Qur’an, striving to be of service to one’s fellow believer, and becoming of those who preserve His book for people to come.

Prayer for Increasing Memory

Many have found much blessing (baraka) in performing the following prayer, as reported by Imam Tirmidhi in his Jami`: On a Thursday night, wake up in the last portion of the night. If the last portion is difficult, then wake up the middle of the night. If that too is difficult, then the first portion of the night. Perform four cycles (rak`at) in such a manner that in the first cycle (rak`at) you recite Surah Yasin; in the second cycle (rak`at) Surah Al-Dukhan; in the third cycle (rak`at) Surah al-Sajdah; and in the forth cycle (rak`at) Surah al-Mulk. After completing the prayer praise Allah, and send salutations upon the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and the rest of the Prophets (Allah be pleased with them all). Ask for forgiveness for the community of believers, and then recite the following supplication:

“O Allah, have mercy on me by helping me to leave sins forever, as long as you keep me alive. And have mercy on me from taking upon myself what does not concern me, and provide me good sight for what will make You pleased with me. Ya Allah! Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of such glory, generosity, and honour that is not exceeded, I ask you, O Allah, O Rahman, by Your glory and the light of Your Countenance, to make my heart constant in remembering Your Book as You taught me, and grant me that I recite it in the manner that will make You pleased with me. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of glory, and generosity, and honour that is not exceeded, I ask you, O Allah, O Rahman, by Your glory and the light of Your Countenance, to enlighten my sight with Your Book, and make my tongue free with it, and to relieve with it my heart from all problems, and to expand my chest with it, and to wash my body with it. For indeed, none aids me upon the truth other than You, and none give it except You, and there is no might or power except by Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent.

Supplications during Bowing and Prostration

There are numerous supplications which one can make during the bowing and prostration. The following are narrated by the mother of the believers `Aisha (Allah be pleased with her):

[1] “In his ruku’ and sajda the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say often, ‘Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise. O Allah, forgive me! (Subhank Allahumma rabbana wa bi hamdik Allahumma ighfirli)'” [Agreed upon]

سُبْحَانَكَ الْلَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِي

[2] The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say in his bowing and prostration, “Glorious, Holy, Lord of the angels and the Spirit. (Subbuhun quddusun rabb al-mala’ikati wa al-ruh)” [Muslim]

سُبُّوْحٌ قُدُّوْسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالرُّوْحِ

And Allah alone gives success.
