Who Performed the Marriages of the Prophet (Allah Bless Him and Give Him Peace)?

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Who did the nikah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to his wives? Did Jibril perform the nikah?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

No, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) did not require someone to perform the nikah for him.

What is a Nikah?

The nikah is an offer and acceptance in the presence of two male, or one male and two female witnesses. It is a recommended sunna for the marriage to be conducted by a learned person, and for them to give a short reminder (khutba). There are also one or two other considerations which one should consult about.

Marriage and the Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)

Ibn Mulaqqin mentions in his Ghayat al-Sul fi Khasa’is al-Rasul that there were a number of issues, in relation to marriage, that were made easy for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace). These were from those special attributes (khasa’is), given to him by Allah, and specific to him (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Thus, he mentions that from amongst these special qualities was the permission from Allah to take more than four wives, his (Allah bless him and give him peace) not needing a formal nikah ceremony, and many other minor dispensations that were specific to him alone, due to his magnificent status as the Messenger of Allah, leader of the Prophets (Allah bless them and give them all peace), and beloved of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace).

And Allah alone gives success.
